Three Requirements for a Successful Long Island Divorce Mediation
1. Since October of 2010 New York State has permitted no-fault divorce. If one of you wants a divorce, eventually you will be divorced. However, for a Court to grant a divorce all other issues — child custody and parenting time — support and the distribution of property — must be fully resolved. So, while you no longer have to agree to a divorce for your spouse to get the divorce that he or she wants, cooperation is still essential if you are to avoid tremendous expense of time, money, and emotional energies.
2. You both most be prepared to be reasonable and realistic. Getting divorced does not create more money, more houses, more children, or more time. It is more expensive for a family in two homes than in one. We will help you to work out a plan that offers everyone the most, but we cannot work miracles.
3. You must both offer full and complete financial disclosure. Only when we know all assets, liabilities, income, and expenses can we assist you in making a deal that will work.
