How Do I Prepare for the First Long Island Divorce Mediation Session?
There are really only a certain number of issues to determine in a divorce. Download a list of the decisions you will need to make in our complete Decision List, which you can use as a guide. When the file opens you can save a copy of the pdf file to your computer, or just print it from this page.
The following list of documents are often very useful to have during the mediation sessions. The list is at the end of the Decision List that you can download.
Documentation to Bring to Mediation Sessions:
1. past three years tax returns
2. representative pay stub
3. pension statement
4. current statement of home mortgage, including outstanding balance
5. Driver License and Health Insurance cards
6. Social Security numbers of children
7. any other financial statements that are relevant, including current credit card debts, tax liabilities, current checking and savings account statements.
How do you use the Decision List? If you and your spouse are on civil terms, sit down over a cup of coffee and see where you might agree. Take some notes. If you can’t discuss these issues with our spouse, at least each of you go over them separately, so that you have some idea of where you stand.
If you agree, take some notes. Don’t try to resolve differences if the resolution does not come quite naturally. That is our job, during the mediation session.
Even if you do resolve some issues before you come to mediation, we will still go over each and every issue thoroughly, to make sure that you understand your options and what you are deciding to do.
